Leaf Music Distributes “Retro Style” with Wendy Markosky

(Halifax/Kjipuktuk, NS) Leaf Music announces the distribution of a new debut digital recording, Retro Style (WM2024), available August 23, featuring organist Wendy Markosky. Retro Style showcases the “retro style” sounds of the neo-baroque Ahrend organ at the University of Calgary. Dating from 2006, this instrument authentically evokes the tone colours of seventeenth-century North German organs, along with a unique temperament based on a restored instrument from 1692. 

Organist Wendy Markosky explores a diverse group of composers having personal, professional, or historical connections to one other, within a broader context of seventeenth-century North German organ traditions that includes one modern work. Mixing less to more familiar works, the album highlights a wealth of genres and compositional styles from the music of Tunder, Weckmann, Froberger, Böhm, Bruhns, Buxtehude, Scheidt, Distler, Scheidemann, and Lübeck. The repertoire reflects the community of connections between many of the composers, historically and personally.

Wendy Markosky is Professor of Music and Music Department Chair at Burman University in Lacombe, Alberta, and organist of the university church. She is an active recitalist, chamber musician and adjudicator. She’s been a panel judge of three national organ playing competitions of the Royal Canadian College of Organists (RCCO) and is an RCCO travelling clinician and examiner. Markosky has performed with Early Music Voices, Early Music Alberta, and Luminous Voices, and is a founding member of the early music ensemble Rosa Barocca. Their album with cellist Elinor Frey won Canada’s 2022 JUNO Award for Classical Album of the Year:  Small Ensemble. A native of Ottawa, Markosky holds a bachelor’s degree in organ form Union College, (Lincoln, Nebraska), and earned master’s and doctoral degrees in organ from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University-Bloomington, where she also studied harpsichord and carillon.

Leaf Music and Mark Fewer Presents Alikeness

Halifax/Kjipuktuk, NS) Leaf Music and Canadian violinist Mark Fewer announce the launch of Alikeness (LM296), available August 16 in digital and physical format. Alikeness features the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra Sinfonia together with percussionist. Aiyun Huang, soprano Deantha Edmunds, and violinist/conductor Mark Fewer in an all Canadian, all strings-based program.  

Fewer says the album is inspired by the human capacity to learn, adapt, and collaborate, and encourages listeners to find their own “alikenesses” within the music while fostering a deeper connection with one another: “Continually experiencing new things but using what is already inside of us, as a way to make our worlds larger, expanding ad infinitum… If we don’t immediately understand something, we use a memory to help us relate. Over the course of my own life as a musician, it has been those inquiring artists who relate to one another as open systems who have inspired me the most.” 

The NSO Sinfonia, based in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, was founded by Peter Gardner and features core string players from the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra.  

Violinist and conductor Mark Fewer has been interpreting music in virtually every genre and setting for over three decades, premiering over 200 works, including more than 50 written for him. His unique discography features multiple JUNO and Grammy-winning recordings and an Opus Prize for a Serge Arcuri tribute. He has served as Concertmaster of the Vancouver Symphony, Artist-in-Residence at Stanford, William Dawson Scholar at McGill, and is currently Head of Strings at the University of Toronto. After 16 years as the founding artistic director of the SweetWater Music Festival, he is now in his sixth season and the Artistic Director of Stratford Summer Music.   

Deantha Edmunds, Canada’s first Inuk professional classical singer, was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in December 2023 for her work empowering Indigenous people and sharing their stories. Her performances, writing, and compositions have earned national and international acclaim.  

Born in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, Aiyun Huang holds a DMA from UC San Diego and is the Head of Percussion at the University of Toronto, directing its Percussion Ensemble. She gained international recognition by winning First Prize and Audience Prize at the 2002 Geneva International Music Competition.  

The album opens with the world premiere of Deantha Edmunds’ Angmalukisaa (“round” in Inuktut), a personal composition about human connections; Edmunds’ four songs are arranged by Bill Brennan, Andrew Downing, Jeff Johnston, and Robert Carli. The next three works feature Fewer as violin soloist and conductor:  Épisodes by Serge Arcuri, (written for the Montreal Baroque Orchestra in 1998,) blends the baroque “concerto grosso” form with modern elements; Matt Brubeck’s The Simple Life, has been newly arranged by Andrew Downing for strings; and the third movement “C” from B-A-C-H by Robert Carli (after J.S. Bach’s surname), was composed in 2013 for the Sweetwater Music Festival. The album concludes with Alikeness, Yoshiaki Onishi’s arrangement of an eight-movement suite by Jaroslaw Kapuściński.  The suite was originally composed in 2015 for the St. Lawrence String Quartet and percussionist Aiyun Huang.

Robert deMaine is the Principal Cellist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and sought-after solo artist and chamber musician. His solo repertoire includes concertos by Haydn, Dvorak, Elgar and Penderecki. And as a recitalist, he is known for magnificent interpretations of J.S. Bach’s cello suites. A first-prize winner in many national and international competitions, deMaine was the first cellist ever to win the grand prize at San Francisco’s prestigious Irving M. Klein International Competition for Strings. He is an exclusive Thomastik-Infeld artist, and performs on a cello made in 1684 by Antonio Stradivari.

Romanian-born Peter Takács has performed widely, receiving critical and audience acclaim for his penetrating interpretations. Takács has performed as a guest soloist with major orchestras in the U.S. and abroad, as well as at important summer festivals such as Tanglewood, Music Mountain, Chautauqua Institution, and Sweden’s Helsingborg Festival. Since 2008 he has been a member of the faculty at the Montecito Summer Music Festival in Santa Barbara, California. He performed and recorded the cycle of 32 Beethoven piano sonatas to critical acclaim in 2011.

Kristan Toczko’s innovative videos have been enjoyed by hundreds of millions since she joined TikTok in 2020. Born in Moncton, she received her BMus from McGill University and her master’s at Yale, winning major competitions at both universities. Kristan also won the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal Competition and the CBC’s Young Artist award. Kristan discovered the virtual world of performance from her home studio in St. John’s during Covid, when her busy freelance career – playing concerts, travelling, and appearing with major Canadian orchestras and ensembles – came crashing down. She now records a harp-related video a day, including teaching videos and song covers; her arrangement of Nothing Else Matters caught the attention of Metallica, who included her performance in the band’s 40th-anniversary concert in San Francisco. Leaf Music Distributes LAUREATE with Measha Brueggergosman-Lee

(Halifax/Kjipuktuk, NS) Leaf Music announces the distribution of a new recording, LAUREATE (PM2024), with acclaimed singer, Measha Brueggergosman-Lee. This double-album celebration commemorates Measha becoming a recipient of the Governor General’s Performing Arts Awards Lifetime Artistic Achievement Award in Classical Music with the release of Live at Westben, an electrifyingly eclectic live concert with her signature hilariously off-beat banter, and Planet Measha, a multi-lingual remix album of singles taken from The Measha Series. Featuring a cross-section of Canada’s most gifted musicians, Live at Westben puts you in a front row seat at a Measha concert while Planet Measha showcases her collaboration with an incredible cast of DJs, singers, and MCs.  With LAUREATE, Measha shows us her vision of “classical” music as being borderless inclusivity built on versatility, friendship, and fearless collaboration. 

For the 2024 Governor General’s Performing Arts Awards Gala performance on June 8th, Measha will perform a newly commissioned orchestration by Canadian composer Aaron Davis of one of Planet Measha’s tracks by famed Canadian hip hop sensation Jay Vernon with the National Arts Symphony Orchestra (NACO) of Henri Duparc’s Au pays où se fait la guerre, featuring Montreal rap sensation, Timal Garnier, in his orchestral debut.

Measha Brueggergosman-Lee holds several honorary doctorates and ambassadorial titles with international charities and is permanent Artist-in-Residence with the Canadian opera company, Opera Atelier. The JUNO award winner has presented innovative programs at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York, Washington’s Kennedy Center, London’s Wigmore Hall, Vienna’s Konzerthaus and Musikverein, Madrid’s Teatro Real as well as at the Schwarzenberg, Edinburgh, Verbier and Bergen Festivals.  She is completing her second year of a master’s degree in theology and released her best-selling memoir Something is Always on Fire in 2018. 

Other milestone recordings in 2023-24 include a song cycle by Robert Fleming for the Canadian Art Song Project and a new work composed for her by Canadian-Dutch composer Jaap Nico Hamburger. She also was the executive producer and director of Forgotten Coast, a 30-minute television episode broadcast on CBC Gem telling the story of her Black Loyalist heritage through the lens of hip-hop artist Jay Vernon, with orchestrations by Aaron Davis and Edwin Huizinga performed by the National Arts Centre Orchestra and Alexander Shelley. Leaf Music released her Zombie Blizzard album, featuring poems by Margaret Atwood and music by Aaron Davis, earlier in 2024. Her new podcast, COMMON GROUND: Conversations About God, a multi-faceted series of in-depth conversations featuring Margaret Atwood, Bruce Cockburn, Tomson Highway, and others, will be available also through the Acadia Divinity College website (https://acadiadiv.ca) and on all major streaming platforms starting on June 6.

Kristan Toczko (HarpistKT) Presents Beauty and the Beast

(Halifax/Kjipuktuk, NS) Kristan Toczko (HarpistKT) presents her second single of the year, a rendition of the Disney classic, Beauty and the Beast’s Prologue. Her harp performance offers a fresh take on this beloved piece. Interestingly, it is rumored that the film director used Saint-Saëns’s Aquarium as temporary music during the film’s editing phase to guide the mood while Alan Menken was still composing the score, resulting in notable similarities between the two pieces.

Leaf Music Distributes Nerve with Ian Foster

(Halifax/Kjipuktuk, NS) Leaf Music announces the distribution of a new digital recording, Nerve (IF10) with genre-defying composer/performer Ian Foster.  

Nerve takes us into the evocative world of contemporary classical crossover, featuring an intricate blend of piano, strings, and electronic textures. Ian Foster is a seasoned songwriter, film composer and music producer, and the album combines prepared pianos and strings with synthesizers, drum loops and a range of electronic instruments evocative of contemporary film scores and even contemporary ambient music. Leaf Music and Skye Consort with Emma Björling Present “Ode & Ballade”

(Halifax/Kjipuktuk, NS) Leaf Music and trans-Atlantic chamber folk ensemble Skye Consort & Emma Björling announce the launch of Ode & Ballade (LM287), available May 17 in both digital and physical versions. Ode & Ballade by Skye Consort & Emma Björling presents stories of medieval saints and sacred wells, fair maidens outsmarting presumptuous knights, beautiful or boisterous drinking songs, thieves meeting their fate, heartbreaking love songs, groovy dance tunes, and celebrations of the return of Spring. The album combines elements from world music and classical traditions to narrate poems, tales, legends, and sonnets from Sweden, Ireland, Scotland, France and more. 

Skye Consort & Emma Björling (skyeconsort.org) was formed in 1999 to bring an art-music aesthetic to the folk music of different world traditions. The ensemble performs music from Scandinavia, Ireland and the British Isles, French Canada, and tunes of their own devising. They find enchanting stories and melodies, bringing them into the 21st century with worldly chamber-folk settings. The band has performed and toured extensively with various collaborators and released seven full-length albums. In November and December of 2018, in collaboration with Emma Björling, Skye Consort created a new repertoire sourced from Scandinavian, Québecois, and Celtic roots. Skye Consort & Emma Björling won the OPUS award for Best World Music Album 2019.  

Ode & Ballade features Emma Björling (lead voice, percussion), Seán Dagher (lead voice, Irish bouzouki, banjo), Amanda Keesmaat (cello, voice), Alex Kehler (nyckelharpa, violin, voice) and Simon Alexandre (nyckelharpa, violin, voice). The musicians sing in three languages (Swedish, French, English), and the words “ode” and “ballade” resonate with meaning in all three: poem, song, tale, sonnet, folly, chant, and dance. The music of this album combines elements from world music and classical traditions to offer audiences thoughtful arrangements and creative compositions: a Swedish Polska accompanied by Québec foot percussion and 18th-century Scottish-style chords, a French song with Norwegian-sounding interludes between the verses, a Purcell/Playford-style dance tune with Swedish texts and accompanied on the banjo. 

The album was recorded in July and August of 2023 at Alchemist Studio in Montreal, with recording, editing, and mixing by Stratsimir Dimitrov and Jeremy VanSlyke as Executive Producer. The recording was produced with assistance from the Canada Council for the Arts.

Leaf Music Distributes Defiant Dances with Symphony Nova Scotia

(Halifax/Kjipuktuk, NS) Leaf Music announces the distribution of a new digital recording, Defiant Dances (SNS2024) with Atlantic Canada’s only professional orchestra, Symphony Nova Scotia under the direction of Holly Mathieson. The orchestra presents a recording of exceptional live performances featuring internationally beloved pianist Sara Davis Buechner and works by four extraordinary women composers.  Defiant Dances celebrates the momentous contribution women have made throughout orchestral history and is available for purchase and streaming on all major platforms on May 3.

The album includes Florence Price’s Piano Concerto in One Movement and Louise Farrenc’s Overture No. 1 in E Minor. Two Canadian composers – Alice Ping Yee Ho and Karen Sunabacka – round out the featured works. Sunabacka’s Born by the River (for string orchestra) was originally commissioned by the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, inspired by her Métis grandmother, Lenore Clouston (nee Birston).

Alice Ping Yee Ho’s The Phantom Bird of Han won the 2022 Maria Anna Mozart Award and was premiered by Symphony Nova Scotia in March of 2023. Launched in 2016, the Award supports the work of Canadian women composers, providing $10,000 for Symphony Nova Scotia to commission and perform a new symphonic work. The Phantom Bird of Han was featured on the CBC music program In Concert with Paolo Pietropaolo as part of an International Women’s Day broadcast and was heard in the Atlantic provinces on both CBC Music and CBC Radio on The East Coast Music Hour with Bill Roach.

Noted for her musical command, cosmopolitan artistry, and visionary independence, Sara Davis Buechner is one of the most original concert pianists of our time. She has performed in every state and province of North America and commissioned and premiered important contemporary scores by composers such as Michael Brown, John Corigliano, Ray Green, Dick Hyman, Jared Miller, and others. Ms. Buechner has released numerous acclaimed recordings of rare piano music by composers such as Rudolf Friml, Dana Suesse, and Ferruccio Busoni. A dedicated Yamaha Artist, Ms. Buechner also appears as a speaker and performer as a proud transgender woman.
