Romance pour alto et piano
“I composed this Romance in April 1999. The year before, I had been invited to Les Choralies in Vaison-la-Romaine (Provence, France) as a composer and pianist for the European premiere of my cantata Douces Mémoires. During that stay, I became friends with a singer who also played the viola—an encounter that inspired me to write this piece. Sadly, the distance between us meant we never had the chance to perform it together. I later adapted the Romance for cello and piano and had a few opportunities to perform it in concert. This recording by Frédéric Lambert and Chloé Dumoulin marks the premiere performance of the original version for viola.” —Alain Payette
