Ysaÿe, J. S. Bach & Paganini: Works for Solo Violin

Karl Stobbe’s latest album, titled Ysaÿe, J. S. Bach & Paganini: Works for Solo Violin, is part of a six-album series based on the unaccompanied violin repertoire. This album traces the important relationship between luthiers, players, and composers by weaving this narrative through the compositions of three giants in solo violin playing and composition—Johann Sebastian Bach, Niccolò Paganini, and Eugène Ysaÿe.

It is Stobbe’s hope to honour these three towering figures in the history of solo violin music for their service to the luthiers and for enriching the narratives of today’s great instruments. This album was recorded on a violin made in 1806 by Nicolas Lupot, and on a bow made in 1790 by François Xavier Tourte. They represent the finest French artisans in their field, each establishing a standard of workmanship and quality that would become the ideal in France and around the world.

Stobbe performs Bach’s B minor Partita: eight short dances known for their bravura character. Karl selected three of Paganini’s most technically treacherous but musically ingenious Caprices, each packing life and joy into their unique character. Finally, Karl performs Ysaÿe’s fourth Solo Sonata. Ysaÿe knew Paganini’s Caprices and Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas by heart. This Sonata is an homage that melds Paganini’s flair with Bach’s profound counterpoint and complexity.

As a concertmaster, chamber musician, soloist, and performer, Karl Stobbe is recognized as one of Canada’s most accomplished violinists, known for his dedication to violin excellence. Stobbe completed his Master of Music degree from Indiana University with a minor in Violin Repair and Construction. His passion for the construction and mechanics of the violin is an integral part of his professional musical life and continues to influence his performances and teaching.
